Robinson Catches out Great Alne

The Super O's returned to winning ways on Sunday as Smithy hit 56 to lead the way to a 46 run victory over close rivals Great Alne.

With the game scheduled for a 2.30pm start, the captain cleverly got everyone to the ground 30 mins early to build camaraderie and team bonding. This unfortunately backfired as Pittsy, Cresser and Spiers again failed to bring their annual subs money and generally let the side down. How people can buy shirts and caps and then not pay for them is beyond me. It is in fact stealing which could result in a caution or a custodial sentence.

The captain's proved to be a good tosser this year winning the majority of tosses and, undaunted by scores of 76 and 92, he again elected to bat first. A second over 6 by the veteran Harrison showed Offenham's intentions and his 4th over soft effort to cover showed their true colours. The mid order collapse happened a bit earlier as the chairman, or PC as we shall call him, looked a bit edgy and slightly shifty for his 4 singles before being bowled by Pethick. Robinson, who'd scored a Boycottesque 15 off 14 overs in the midweek 20/20 had been promoted to number 4 but was quickly back in the pavilion this time for 2.

Lyall (24) and Smith then developed an excellent partnership of 67, with Smith passing 50 for the second time this season before they both got out to give someone else a go. Smith's 56 was adorned with 8 boundaries, 3 of which were 6's but this was somewhat overshadowed by the umpiring of Spiers, usually seen acting all embarrassed like Billy Nomates at square leg, had never stood at the business end. To his amazment he found he could actually count to six and call over. Upon coming off he fatally said within earshot of the captain that he enjoyed it, thus securing his place in the side for years to come (providing he pays his subs etc).

Cresswell given the sloggers number 7 slot didn't disappoint as he lost two balls in the next field in an all too brief 14. Meanwhile, Minshull remained on 0 at the other end and hadn't decided to join in yet. Psyco came to the crease, all pumped up from his glorious 30 in the midweek 20/20, which involved two 6's and three 4's and a dent in Richard's car (well he turned up late and got the boundary parking spot at square leg). Admittedly, it was against the worst bowler that had ever been seen – that is until Spiers bowled in the next innings, a point made by the batsman at the time who turned to the pavilion and shouted, 'ere Alex, he's worse than you'. A little unfair as he was in the middle of another six and surely there's an etiquette rule about that – Gordon will know.

As it 'appened, Belcher's stay was all too brief (but gets rather a lot of coverage) as first ball, the peaest of pea-rollers went under the Woodworm bat and hit middle stump. For those keeping up with the £££'s per runs ratio it's cost Psyco £5 per run to date.

Minshull hit a huge huge six into the next village to keep the score ticking over and Ellis joined in with a boundary in his 6. Pittsy was too busy working out how many runs he'd need to score to make his £5 match day subs value for money, to notice a straight ball which he missed. Still, he had been spotted with his extra large sandwich box which ensured he didn't go home empty handed. Pitts had made 2 which he happily pointed out was two more than Belcher but Belcher had a plan. So keen was he to get more runs scored with his bat that he agreed to let Dan use it. One ball later and Spiers was back in the pavilion having lofted one to mid off. Two golden ducks in one day with the same bat. It must be the bat.

Capt Minshull was left stranded on 17 which serves him right as he couldn't be bothered to run a bye at the end of the previous over. Offenham had posted a respectable 161 but it could have been so much more if it wasn't for the evil bat.

After a magnificent tea, with not a crisp in sight, Harrison roared in and took the first wicket of the first teamer, with his third ball. His fifth ball also looked to be going the same way as PC was wandering towards a lofted effort in the covers before the whole team shouted, 'Scott's ball', only to see the Aussie drop it. AH muttered something about convicts.

Cresswell bowled the best all season and was peppering the wicket. Finally he got one to seam from leg to off and gave the batsmen no chance. A second wicket from the slimline fast bowler in his fifth over had Great Alne on the rack. Psyco came on and bowled the usual Cresswell mix of no ball beamers, well someone had to do it. Ruffled, Temple didn't pick the slightly slower long hop outside off and belted it to cover. It went so fast that no one had time to stop PC from putting his hands out and amazingly catching it. It was a turning point.

Minshull took two middle order wickets, a plum LBW was followed in the next over by a terrific catch by Robinson at short mid on. Aaron held another one from Belcher's bowling before dropping the simplest of catches because he thought three would have meant a jug. Minshull got a third wicket before Lyall came on to show he doesn't just drop catches off other people's bowling. Bowling straight bagged him a brace though. Pittsy missed out on the wickets but he did get to bowl 12 balls.

A great Offenham win was toasted with a couple of beers after a great team effort.

No game next week as it's Fathers' Day. Next game is Hill & Moor at home on the 24 at 2pm which may give T Davies the chance to get his knee mended.
